Rien ne prédestinait ce couple de Saint-Malo, travaillant tous les deux dans la téléphonie, à se lancer dans cette aventure marocaine. Avec une bonne dose d’heureux hasards, d’enthousiasme, de travail acharné et de volonté farouche, Pierre et Jessica exportent désormais leur marque Original Marrakech, avec leurs paniers et chapeaux brodés, dans le monde entier…Et ils n’en reviennent pas eux-mêmes ! Ce qui ne devait être au départ qu’une activité annexe pour “occuper” Jessica, est devenu un succès international. LIFE salue cette belle réussite et vous raconte leur histoire.
En 2010, Pierre Challimand travaille avec Nicolas Nancy à la Terrasse des épices. Il apprend alors qu’une boutique se libère dans le souk Chérifia juste en dessous. Il décide de la louer avant même de savoir ce qu’il y fera ! Et doucement l’idée s’est mise à germer… À Saint-Malo, dont ils sont originaires, pas un seul touriste ne repart sans le fameux bol breton avec son prénom en souvenir. Pierre et Jessica cherchent alors un produit emblématique du Maroc qu’ils puissent personnaliser. Les paniers et chapeaux en paille, initialement utilisés dans les campagnes par les paysans, s’imposent à eux…
En avril 2010, ils se lancent dans ce pari audacieux et ouvrent leur boutique au rez-de-chaussée du souk, non sans “amuser” la galerie : au départ personne n’y croit. “On me prend souvent pour un fou” s’amuse Pierre, qui confesse “avoir une idée toutes les trente secondes en moyenne”. Leurs produits sont d’abord présents à La Terrasse des épices et dans les riads, puis en France dans des maisons d’hôtes. Ils sont très vite approchés par Babbler, un genre de facebook journalistes/créateurs, qui leur propose une participation sur Monshowroom.com…
C’est le coup de boost, les journalistes de la capitale sont conquis et le font savoir. De là, tout s’enchaîne, comme naturellement, et le couple suit le mouvement, toujours humble, toujours surpris par cette réussite inattendue. C’est d’abord le Bon Marché, célèbre grand magasin de luxe parisien, qui installe un corner Original Marrakech où Jessica passe des journées entières à broder chapeaux, paniers et corbeilles pour des centaines de clients ravis. Cette première participation prévue pour deux semaines dure finalement six mois, avec une présence en vitrine durant deux mois. C’est la consécration pour ces deux passionnés !
En 2016, le couple s’expatrie pour deux semaines de folie à Tokyo, dans un magasin du quartier top luxe de la capitale. L’expérience est surréaliste : ils sont traités comme des stars, ils sont pris en photo avec des fans, voient les clients débarquer en Ferrari et se garer devant la boutique, les gens faire la queue avec des tickets d’entrée… Ils en repartent épuisés, mais conquis…
Bref les produits cartonnent, la marque est présente en France, et aussi à Dubaï, à Hong Kong, en Australie, aux Etats-Unis… mais pas question de perdre les pédales : Pierre et Jessica insistent pour maintenir une qualité irréprochable et des ateliers à taille humaine, quitte à refuser les commandes irréalisables. “Avant d’être un business, c’est un plaisir et une passion”, précisent-ils, “on a vécu des heures de tâtonnements, de tests, envahis de laine et de paniers partout dans la maison.”
Et avec l’arrivée de baby Louise en novembre dernier, -une magnifique petite fille qui a manifestement hérité de l’enthousiasme et de la bonne humeur de ses parents-, l’inspiration redouble, de nouvelles idées fusent. Et les paniers et chapeaux Original Marrakech, c’est sûr, vont continuer à parader sur les plages, les piscines, les trottoirs, les blogs et réseaux sociaux aux quatre coins du monde !
